But
if not, we'll also have Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica,
literary, costuming, horror and comics programming, too, along
with many other topics."
TimeGate's
guest list this year includes Paul McGillion and Diana
Botsford.
Although best known for their work in other science fiction
franchises, McGillion played a barracks leader in J. J. Abrams'
first Star Trek film (2009) and Botsford co-authored
the Star Trek: The Next Generation sixth-season episode
"Rascals" (1992). Next issue, The
Republiqué will report on any Star Trek-related
programming events that TimeGate may have announced by that
time.
The USS Republic will have an official presence at
TimeGate. Please contact
the Captain if you're interested in helping at our
fan table.
TimeGate memberships for persons age 13 and up are $60 at

Away
Mission to X-Men: Days of Future Past
1:00 p.m. Sunday, May 25, 2014
AMC
North Dekalb Mall 16
2050 Lawrenceville Hwy
Decatur GA 30033 |
The
ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the
species across two time periods in
X-Men: Days of Future Past. The characters from the
original X-Men film trilogy join forces with their
younger selves from X-Men: First Class in an epic battle
that must change the past to save our future. The X-Men
send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change
history and prevent an event that results in doom for both
humans and mutants.
TAKE NOTE OF THE DAY AND TIME!
Because this highly anticipated film premieres on the
same weekend as TimeGate, we've chosen to hold our away mission
on Sunday and at the only matinee screening at this theater. Tickets
for adults are only $6.00 for this showtime, compared
to $13.75 for an evening showtime at the same theater and
$10.00 for a matinee showtime at the nearby Regal Hollywood
24 in Chamblee. (See? We really do check
these things out for you!) Click the link below
to be taken directly to Fandango's checkout page for this
showtime at this theater. Buy your ticket now to
avoid a possible sell-out and join your fellow crewmates
on this away mission to X-Men: Days of Future Past! |

NEWS
& ANNOUNCEMENTS
In
Memoriam: Ensign Page E. Lewis
May 28, 1955 - March 1, 2014 |
The
USS Republic is saddened to announce the passing of
former member Ensign Page Eileen Lewis at Grady Hospital
in Atlanta due to longtime health issues and heart failure. She
was 58.
A native of Pennsylvania, Page joined the Republic
in December 2007 and was a member in good standing for three
years, attending chapter events and activities as often as
her health and mobility issues allowed. Her family
says she was "born a Trekkie."
Page was cremated and a memorial service was held for her
on March 24, attended by her family and close friends. The
USS Republic extends its sincerest condolences to her
family. Ad eundum quo nemo ante iit. |
Membership
dues and payment options updated on web site |
The
"How to Join" page on the Republic's web
site has finally been updated with the new two-tier membership
dues structure that STARFLEET International imposed upon its
chapters last year. The updated page now includes
instructions and PayPal links for both the "Standard
Membership" and "E-Membership" options for
individuals and families up to six people at one address,
as well as chapter-only dues payment buttons for those members
who incorrectly submit their STARFLEET dues payments to STARFLEET
instead of the Republic, as has been chapter policy
for the last eight years, and need to pay their chapter dues.
Please check the "Membership Renewals" list in the
sidebar of The Republiqué every issue and if
your name is on it, please click the "Click Here to Renew!"
button to renew your membership dues quickly and easily with
PayPal. Thank you! |

On
February 29, 2012, during a trip to Washington, D.C., to
keynote the 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr. and African-American
History Month commemorative presentations at NASA's Goddard
Museum, Star Trek‘s Nichelle Nichols met President
Barack Obama in the White House's Oval Office. After
the meeting, Nichols tweeted about the meeting, noting that
the President was indeed a Trekkie and that he confessed
he once had a crush on her.
One year later, in a discussion about the sequester with
the White House press corps, the President stated, "I'm
presenting a fair deal... the fact that they don't take
it means that I should somehow, you know, do a Jedi mind
meld with these folks and convince them to do what's right."
His sci-fi faux pas made headlines around the country.

ABOUT
THE REPUBLIC
|
The
USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned
as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988,
at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia. As
of May 4, 2014, the Republic crew includes 39
members who are active members of STARFLEET in good
standing.
|
The
Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule
of events for its members, but does not hold meetings
on a consistently fixed date each month.
|
Because
the USS Republic is a duly commissioned chapter
of STARFLEET International and is bound and governed by
its Constitution and By-Laws, membership in STARFLEET
is a prerequisite for membership in the Republic. STARFLEET
dues for one person are $20 for a "Standard Membership"
or $10 for an "E-Membership" and chapter dues
are $10 per person for either membership option. A
combined payment for all dues is collected by the Republic
(family discounts are available with certain conditions
and restrictions). Additional information about
the two STARFLEET membership options, amounts due for
additional family members, payment options and payment
instructions is on the "How to Join" page of
our our award-winning web site.

These
Are The Voyages: Season 2 released |
By
Brian Drew
April 18, 2014
|
The
eagerly awaited second volume of author Marc Cushman's exhaustive
examination of the production of the original Star Trek
series, These Are the Voyages, was released this
past Wednesday, and we have a closer look. |
The
first volume, which covered the history of the series from
its earliest stages to the end of season one, was lauded
by critics, fans and cast members for its incredible attention
to detail. Leonard Nimoy himself called the book's
level of research "astounding... an incredible job." |
|
The
second volume, which covers the entirety of season two and
features a forward by Walter Koenig, promises to be even
more expansive than the first. According to the promotional
materials, the second book will cover a variety of interesting
topics: |
|
Learn
why Leonard Nimoy almost didn't return for season
two |
|
Explore
why Lucille Ball, whose Desilu Studios had gambled
big on financing Star Trek, would lose her
studio in trying to keep Star Trek on the air |
|
Discover
the real reason Gene Coon suddenly quit as series
producer in the middle of season two |
|
Learn
which stories by renowned science fiction masters
never made it to the screen and why |
|
Find
out which episodes almost didn't make it in front
of the camera |
|
Read
the memos from Roddenberry and his staff and NBC concerning
all 26 episodes from season two |
|
Witness
the continuing deception by the network over the show's
ratings, and how the fans took on a corporate giant
to save their favorite series |
|
A
great deal of the book's research comes from Gene Roddenberry's
personal collection of production notes, memos, letters,
budgets and scripts, many of which are stored at UCLA. |
TrekMovie's
Nancy Garrett interviewed Cushman last fall, where he spoke
of the genesis of the project (pun intended), the challenges
he faced and his feelings on Trek in general. You
can read that interview here. |
More
information about the books, including the chance to purchase
an autographed copy ($29.95 plus shipping and handling)
can be found here.
|
Amazon
also appears to be selling the book for the same $29.95,
but apparently sans the author autographs. |
The
third volume of the series, covering season three, will
be released in the fall. |
TrekMovie
will have more coverage of this title in the weeks ahead. |
