A Star Trek-Themed Lecture and "Sky Talk"

7:00 p.m., Saturday, November 22, 2014
Red Top Mountain State Park Visitors Center
653 Red Top Mountain Rd SE
Cartersville GA  30121
(800) 864-7275
What would you discover if you could put all the known worlds of the Star Trek universe on a map?  Out of the hundreds of places mentioned in all the Star Trek series and movies, only 43 can actually be matched up with stars and objects we know.
On November 22, join your friends and crewmates on an away mission to the Red Top Mountain State Park Visitors Center in Cartersville to hear Dr. Larry Krumenaker present a 45-minute lecture, suitable for ages 10 and up, on the astronomical phenomena that can be found in both Star Trek and our own skies.  After this presentation, weather permitting, Dr. Krumenaker will take the away team outside for some actual stargazing in a night sky that doesn't suffer from the light pollution that Atlanta's does.  Star Trek costumes are not encouraged for this event; instead, dress appropriately and warmly for what will most likely be a chilly evening outside.

Dr. Larry Krumenaker is a professional astronomer and educator, as well as a science, technology and online services journalist.  A member of the National Association of Science Writers, he has written dozens of articles for various academic, general science and information science publications, as well as several books.  Visit Dr. Krumenaker's web site here.

Admission to Red Top State Mountain State Park is $5 per vehicle and admission to this presentation in the Visitors Center is $2 per person.  Online reservations can be made here or you can pay by cash or credit card at the door.  The Park is about 35 miles northwest of Atlanta straight up Interstate 75; click here to contact the Captain if you'd like to carpool (although not necessarily with the Captain!).
Away Mission to Farragut Fest 2014

9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 2014
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 7, 2014
Farragut Films Studios
451 West William Avenue
Kingsland GA  31548
Farragut Fest 2014 is a celebration of science fiction, Star Trek and "All Things Farragut" on Saturday and Sunday, December 7-8, at Farragut Films' studios in Kingsland, Georgia.  Kingsland is about 35 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida, and a 350-mile, 5-hour drive from Atlanta.

ENS1 Jeff Trew and ENS1 Joanne Trew (above, in 2012) and ENS1 Nelson M. Barnhouse and ENS1 Wil Sims (below, in 2013) flank FCapt Eric L. Watts on the bridge of the USS Farragut at the last two Farragut Fests.
Farragut Fest includes an open house of the studios, where you can walk through the largest display of freestanding Star Trek sets on planet Earth, have your picture taken on the bridge and meet some of the cast and crew from Farragut Films' various Star Trek fan film productions, including Vic Mignogna from Star Trek Continues and many others from Starship Farragut, Dreadnought Dominion, Exeter Trek and more.  Cast members will present several panels about their respective series, and there will be several dealers with a variety of collectibles and merchandise for sale.  Admission is $10 for adults aged 18 and up, $5 for teens aged 13-17, and free for kids 12 and under.  For more information about Farragut Fest, including nearby hotels offering special event rates, visit the Farragut Fest web site.  If you're interested in carpooling or sharing a hotel room, click here to contact the Captain.
NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Keith R. A. DeCandido confirmed to appear at Treklanta
The USS Republic, host of the annual sci-fi convention Treklanta (formerly TrekTrax Atlanta), is pleased to announce that Keith R. A. DeCandido has been confirmed to appear as a guest of honor at our 2015 convention.  DeCandido has previously appeared at our convention in 2013 and 2014, and we are pleased that he will be able to join us again in 2015.

DeCandido is the prolific writer/editor of many Star Trek and other sci-fi franchise novels, novellas, short stories, comic books and eBooks.  He is also an editor, musician, podcaster and voice actor, and holds a second-degree black belt in karate.  More importantly, he is one helluva nice guy and a hugely popular convention guest.

Learn more about DeCandido at his "cheerfully retro" web site at DeCandido.net, which is the gateway to his blog, his Facebook page, his Twitter feed, the aforementioned podcasts and a whole lot more.

Treklanta management is currently in negotiations with a number of potential celebrity guests from various sci-fi franchises, including Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and Babylon 5.  Stay tuned to The Republiqué, check the Treklanta web site and Treklanta Facebook page and follow us on Twitter for future guests announcements!

Deadline to announce candidacy for Commanding Officer is November 30

Fleet Captain Eric L. Watts' fourth two-year term as Commanding Officer of the USS Republic will soon be coming to a close, and all members in good standing will be asked to cast their vote for the candidate they want to lead and administrate this chapter for the next two years.

Candidates for the position must be a member in good standing of STARFLEET International, must have taken and passed Officers Training School (OTS) and Officers Command College (OCC), and must be at least 18 years of age.  Members interested in taking OTS and/or OCC should visit the STARFLEET Academy web site.  In accordance with the Republic's Rank Assignment & Promotions Policy, members who take and pass both courses receive an automatic promotion to Lieutenant, Junior Grade (Lt. JG).

As of November 13, there are five members of the Republic in good standing who hold the necessary credentials to hold the office of Commanding Officer.  In alphabetical order, they are:

Captain Matt Ebeling, former CO, currently inactive
Admiral Mike Henigan, currently serving as Executive Officer
Admiral Kelly Hilliard, currently serving as Zone 2 Coordinator
Lt. JG Robert Louis Simon, member-at-large
Fleet Captain Eric L. Watts, the incumbent Commanding Officer

In addition to these individuals, three additional members have completed the OTS requirement and could be eligible to run for the office of CO should they complete the OCC requirement by the end of the year.  Those members are ENS2 Tracey S. Harwell, ENS2 Tracy O'Quinn and ENS1 Julianne Trew.

Deadline to announce candidacy is November 30
The election for the USS Republic's Commanding Officer for the 2015-2016 term will be held in December.  If more than one eligible member announces his or her candidacy before November 30, paper ballots will be mailed to each member in good standing in early December so that all members of record can cast their ballot.  If no member announces their candidacy before November 30, a voice vote will be held at the chapter's Holiday Party on Saturday, December 20.  Only those members whose STARFLEET and chapter dues are current will be eligible to vote.  The new Commanding Officer, if any, will assume office on January 1, 2015.

In an exclusive interview for These are the Voyages: TOS, Season One, former Associate Producer and Story Consultant John D. F. Black tells how he was asked to "sit in" for Jeffrey Hunter, who played Capt. Christopher Pike in the first pilot, "The Cage."  Black had left the series a short time earlier, after writing his first draft script for "The Menagerie," then to be rewritten by Gene Roddenberry.  He and his wife, Mary, who served as Black's secretary during his time at Star Trek, shared the tale with writer Marc Cushman.

Mary Black said, "Dorothy [Fontana] called and said that they had this really fun idea.  Because John's eyes matched the eyes of Jeffrey Hunter---and they couldn't find another actor who had the right eyes, and they were sure John did---they wanted him to come in and sit in the wheelchair and be Captain Pike, with lots of makeup on."

John Black, who had originally aspired to be an actor, added, "Both of us immediately had the attitude that that wouldn't be very much fun.  I didn't hesitate at all in turning it down."

Another set of blue eyes had to be found quickly.  Sean Kenney won the role, but he didn't always feel like a winner.  With facial prosthetics and layers of makeup that did not allow him to change expression for several hours at a time, Kenney even had to eat his lunch through a straw... and not laugh, or even smile, as William Shatner---known for telling jokes while on the set---had the rest of the cast and crew in stitches.

ABOUT THE REPUBLIC
The USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988, at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia.  As of November 13, 2014, the Republic crew includes 32 members who are active members of STARFLEET in good standing.
The Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule of events for its members, but does not hold meetings on a consistently fixed date each month.
Because the USS Republic is a duly commissioned chapter of STARFLEET International and is bound and governed by its Constitution and By-Laws, membership in STARFLEET is a prerequisite for membership in the Republic.  STARFLEET dues for one person are $20 for a "Standard Membership" or $10 for an "E-Membership" and chapter dues are $10 per person for either membership option.  A combined payment for all dues is collected by the Republic (family discounts are available with certain conditions and restrictions).  Additional information about the two STARFLEET membership options, amounts due for additional family members, payment options and payment instructions is on the "How to Join" page of our award-winning web site.

NEWS from
Star Trek Books for 2015
By T'Bonz
November 3, 2014
New information on several Star Trek books to be released next year has been revealed.
In addition, the cover for John Jackson Miller‘s Star Trek: The Next Generation: Takedown can now be seen.
Takedown will be released in February, after January's Deep Space Nine: The Missing (Una McCormack).  In Takedown, "When renegade Federation starships begin wreaking destruction across the Alpha Quadrant, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise are shocked to discover that the mastermind behind this sudden threat is none other than Picard's protégé and friend: Admiral William T. Riker.  The newly minted admiral is on board the USS Aventine as part of a special assignment, even as the mystery deepens behind his involvement in the growing crisis.  But the Aventine is helmed by Captain Ezri Dax—someone who is no stranger to breaking Starfleet regulations—and her starship is by far the faster vessel... and Riker cannot yield even to his former mentor.  It's a battle of tactical geniuses and a race against time as Picard struggles to find answers before the quadrant's great powers violently retaliate against the Federation."
Takedown‘s cover was created by the designer of the Aventine, Mark Rademaker.
In March, fans can expect two original series books: Savage Trade (Tony Daniel), and Shadow of the Machine (an eBook by Scott Harrison).
April will bring a book from Christopher L. Bennett, Enterprise: Rise of the Federation: Uncertain Logic; while May will bring the original series book Crisis of Consciousness (Dave Galanter).
Two books will debut in June: a New Frontier book by Peter David, and The Next Generation: Armageddon's Arrow by Dayton Ward.  In Armageddon's Arrow, "It is a new age of exploration, and the USS Enterprise is dispatched to the Odyssean Pass, a region charted only by unmanned probes and believed to contain numerous inhabited worlds.  Approaching a star system with two such planets, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew find a massive alien vessel, drifting in interstellar space for decades.  Sensors detect life aboard the derelict—aliens held in suspended animation.  Thought to be an immense sleeper ship, the vessel actually is a weapon capable of destroying entire worlds... the final gambit in a war that has raged for generations across the nearby system.  Captain Picard is now caught in the middle of this conflict and attempts to mediate, as both sides want this doomsday weapon... which was sent from the future with the sole purpose of ending the interplanetary war before it even began!"
Taking readers up through August will be Deep Space Nine: Sacraments of Fire (David R. George III) and Seekers 3: Long Shot (David Mack).
More books will follow later in the year, but exact release dates have not yet been set.
