Away Mission to Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Saturday, December 19, 2015
Time and Location To Be Announced
It's finally here!  The long-awaited seventh Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens, directed by former Star Trek film director J. J. Abrams, finally hits the theaters on Friday, December 18.  And while there are no doubt a lot of our members and friends who will insist on seeing it on Friday—or possibly even late Thursday night, if some theaters actually schedule a 12:01 a.m. showing, which is likely—the Republic hopes you'll join us for this very special away mission for Saturday afternoon, December 19, in order to avoid what is sure to be huge crowds on Friday and to get matinee-priced tickets.  If you'd like to join us for your first viewing of this movie... great!  If you can't wait and must see it on Friday, and would like to join us on Saturday as your second viewing... that's great, too!  In either event, it would be great for the USS Republic to make a strong showing, either in costume or not.  Please join us!

Exact time and location will be announced later, but we'll look for a theater somewhere in north DeKalb County for this away mission.  Stay tuned for details!

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Treklanta announces Jack Stauffer as Guest of Honor for 2016
Treklanta is delighted to announce that Mr. Jack Stauffer will be joining us as a Guest of Honor for our 2016 convention!  Mr. Stauffer is best-known to science fiction fans as Lt. Bojay on the original Battlestar Galactica television series.

Since 1968, Jack Stauffer's career has encompassed the entire spectrum of the entertainment industry.  From his starring roles as Bojay in the original Battlestar Galactica television series and as Chuck Tyler in All My Children to pilots for his own series on three other occasions, guest appearances on more than 60 different primetime series, miniseries and television movies, numerous stage productions and over 250 commercials, Mr. Stauffer personifies the model of the versatile actor.  Most recently, in 2008, Mr. Stauffer regaled San Francisco Bay area viewers with a stunning portrayal of Willy Loman in the Hapgood Theatre’s production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman.  This performance was hailed by area critics as "absolutely stunning and honest" and "riveting."

Since 2000, when he left his home in Southern California and moved to the Monterey Peninsula, Mr. Stauffer has been active as both an actor and a director, starring in productions for most of the area's theaters.  As a director, in 2006, he was at the helm of Pacific Repertory Theatre's The Full Monty.  This production broke the attendance record for the theater and was hailed as the best production in the theater's history.  In 2006, he also directed A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum for Monterey Peninsula College.  Since 2000, he has directed numerous other shows, including Lend Me a Tenor, Black Comedy, Over the River and Through the Woods, Don't Dress for Dinner and the musical Messugah-nuns.  These productions, garnering smash reviews and hailed by more than one newspaper as being among the best comedies ever presented on the Monterey Peninsula, completely sold out and had to be extended.

Also a versatile nightclub entertainer, Mr. Stauffer has performed at conventions all over the country.  His cabaret, "How Come I Never Got the Girl?," which he will present at Treklanta, features songs from musicals he has starred in wrapped around humorous anecdotes from his many years in the business.  He will also present a professional theater seminar... a must-see and must-do event for all aspiring actors at Treklanta!  Mr. Stauffer will also attend our exclusive VIP Champagne Reception, serve as a judge for the Miss Klingon Empire Beauty Pageant and present awards at the Independent Star Trek Fan Film Awards ceremony.

Treklanta will be held April 15-17, 2016, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Atlanta Northlake hotel in Tucker, Georgia.  Memberships are currently only $35, VIP Champagne Reception tickers are $30 and hotel rooms are only $91 a night.  Prereg, get your reception ticket and book your room NOW at www.treklanta.org!

In 1991, former President Ronald Reagan visited the set of Star Trek: The Next Generation during the production of the two-part fourth season finale/fifth season premiere episode "Redemption."  In this photo, Star Trek writer Michael Piller and producer Rick Berman are seen standing on either side of the President.  While on the set, President Reagan was introduced to Gene Roddenberry as well as Patrick Stewart.  Stewart can be seen standing at the extreme right.

During this 1991 visit, when President Reagan was asked for his impression of the Klingons, he quipped, "I like them.  They remind me of Congress."  It was also reported that the former President, who was known for his gracious and humble behavior, promptly knelt and picked up Gene Roddenberry's cane when the ailing Star Trek creator accidentally dropped it during their conversation, even though Reagan was nearly ten years older.  Reagan later remarked, "I felt as if I had been knighted."

In his 2004 memoir about his father, In the Words of Ronald Reagan, President Reagan's eldest son Michael wrote the following passage in which the Star Trek set visit was discussed:

"Even after he left office, Dad was fascinated by dreams of a bright future for humanity.  In 1991, he stopped by Paramount Studios and watched the filming of an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.  Between takes, Dad chatted with actor Patrick Stewart and producer Gene Roddenberry about the show and Roddenberry's optimistic vision of the future—an optimism that was in many ways similar to his own."

ABOUT THE REPUBLIC
The USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988, at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia.  As of October 4, 2015, the Republic crew includes 39 members who are active members of STARFLEET in good standing.
The Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule of events for its members, but does not hold meetings on a consistently fixed date each month.
Because the USS Republic is a duly commissioned chapter of STARFLEET International and is bound and governed by its Constitution and By-Laws, membership in STARFLEET is a prerequisite for membership in the Republic.  STARFLEET dues for one person are $20 for a "Standard Membership" or $10 for an "E-Membership" and chapter dues are $10 per person for either membership option.  A combined payment for all dues is collected by the Republic (family discounts are available with certain conditions and restrictions).  Additional information about the two STARFLEET membership options, amounts due for additional family members, payment options and payment instructions is on the "How to Join" page of our award-winning web site.

Newly leaked photos of Star Trek Beyond sets in Vancouver
By Kayla Iacovino
October 1, 2015
TMZ has released a set of photos taken surreptitiously on the Vancouver sets of Star Trek Beyond.  They don’t tell us much about the plot, but do give us a teaser as to what kind of visuals we can expect when the movie hits theaters next year.
It’s not easy to tell exactly what is going on in most of the photos leaked by TMZ earlier today.  Some are blurry (no doubt captured by someone sneaking around who knew they weren’t supposed to be taking photos), and the giant TMZ watermark splashed across all the photos doesn’t help either.
Most of the shots are either of the Enterprise interior, with plenty of green screen and camera rigging equipment strewn about, or an exterior scene (presumably an alien planet) shot in the Pitt River Quarries outside of Vancouver.
TMZ is reporting that some of the interior scenes were set up on a special effects stage, which will be used to composite some serious damage to the Big E, though it’s not clear from the photos.

Idris Elba meanderingly describes his character in Star Trek Beyond
By Jared Whitley
September 29, 2015
Idris Elba, who has been cast as the villain of Star Trek Beyond, gave an interview with MTV recently where he described his character as, among other things, “groundbreaking” for the Star Trek franchise.
I think Star Trek has prided themselves as being quite classic when it comes to villains, like "he’s a guy who wants to end the world," there’s no doubt about that.  But in this version of the film, there’s a slightly different twist to that.  It’s quite an interesting journey, which I think is groundbreaking for the franchise.  But, it still keeps with the "classic bad guy is a classic bad guy" tone.
Now, I have absolutely no idea what any of this means.  Honestly, Elba’s quote kind of reminds me of the behind-the-scenes footage from Star Trek: Nemesis where director Stuart Baird insists that Shinzon wasn’t really a “bad guy” (despite all the mass murder and mind rape and stuff).  However, it seems more likely that Elba and his publicity team have successfully grabbed a lot of attention without giving anything away—that’s smart Internet.
So now we know there’s a groundbreaking twist to this villain, but not much else.
Cinemablend speculated that he could be General Chang, Commander Kruge, Admiral Cartwright, the God of Sha Ka Ree, Sybok or the Gorn.  Writer/Scotty Simon Pegg has intimated that he is not a Klingon, so that rules out the first two.  However, “Khan” was also said to not be “Khan” for Into Darkness, so who knows?
Star Trek V is such a sore spot in the franchise, I doubt anyone wants to revisit it.  And Admiral Marcus from Into Darkness fulfilled the same purpose that a rebooted Admiral Cartwright might (hardly “groundbreaking”).  That would basically just leave the Gorn.  We do know that assistant villain Sofia Boutella will wear make-up that makes her look like a Xindi skunk, so some hardcore Gorn seems unlikely.
Now, it’s possible that Elba is using the term “groundbreaking” in the literal sense, and that his villain’s scheme is to create artificial earthquakes to kill everyone on the Earth’s surface, except for his own “master race” on Mt. Everest.  So yes, I am betting right now that Elba’s character is none other than Hippocrates Noah, supervillain of Dr. Bashir’s spy program.
C’mon.  It would still make more sense than “Khan” ever did.

Star Trek Beyond release date moved to July 22
By Brian Drew
September 17, 2015
Paramount Pictures has announced that it has pushed back the release date of Star Trek Beyond.
The film, originally intended to be released on July 8, has been moved to July 22, where it will be in direct competition with King Arthur and the next Ice Age movie.  It will also be competing against the Ghostbusters reboot, which will be released the week prior, and Matt Damon’s return to the Bourne series, which bows the week after STB.  The Hollywood Reporter suggests the move was made in an attempt to secure an IMAX engagement.
The film was originally competing against Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, a comedy, and the animated The Secret Life of Pets.  The move places the film against other franchises and genre offerings, making it a far more competitive environment.

Star Trek: Voyager actress Jennifer Lien charged with indecent exposure
By Henry Hanks
Updated September 15, 2015
An actress best known for Star Trek: Voyager was arrested on September 3.
Jennifer Lien, who played Kes in the first few seasons of the Star Trek spinoff series, has been charged with indecent exposure.
According to CNN affiliate WATE, Lien was arrested in her home in Harriman, Tennessee.
Neighbor Carey Smith told WATE that Lien came by her home to comment on how Smith's children were being raised and started using vulgar language.
"All of a sudden, here come the shirt up," said Smith.
"She started flashing and, 'Woo hoo,' and I said, 'And what respect is that for kids?'  There was none.  And then she turned around and dropped her pants."
According to the affiliate, Lien was found naked on her couch by deputies and resisted walking to the patrol car after threatening to kill the officers.
Lien was clothed and carried out to the car.
The actress's character on Voyager was Kes, an alien from a mentally advanced race with only a nine-year lifespan.  The series aired from 1995 to 2001 for seven seasons.
The Harriman Police Department also said that Lien has a record that includes aggravated assault, domestic assault, resisting arrest, evading arrest and reckless endangerment.
As of Tuesday night, Lien remained in jail.
