USS Republic & Treklanta Volunteer Staff Meeting #1

7:00 p.m., Saturday, January 4, 2020
Atlanta Marriott Buckhead Hotel
3405 Lenox Rd NE, Atlanta  30326
Treklanta is committed to providing our attending membership with an outstanding convention experience as demonstrated by a commitment to unparalleled customer service.  To achieve this goal, our all-volunteer fan-run convention is organized into various operational departments.  Opportunities to volunteer for at-con staff are available in most of these departments.  If you are interested in volunteering for one or more departments, please makes plans to attend our first Volunteer Staff Meeting of the year at 7:00 p.m. at our host hotel on Saturday, January 4, 2020.
 • Convention Operations Artists Alley
 • Technical Operations Gaming Room & Events
 • On-Site Registration Dealer Relations
 • Guest Transportation Photography
 • Guest Services Videography
 • Security Star Trek Fan Film Festival
 • Main Programming Track Social Media & PR
 • Featured Programming Track Fan Table Promotions
 • Volunteer Recruitment Corporate Outreach Program
Ideally, we will ask you to serve approximately three four-hour duty shifts during the weekend, usually one shift on each day (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), but the number of volunteers needed in each department and the number of hours each volunteer may be asked to serve vary from department to department depending on each department's needs, and we also understand that not all volunteers will attend the convention on all three days.  If you have a special expertise, previous experience or strong interest in a particular department, we'll assign you to the department of your choice.  If you're able and willing to serve in one or more departments, i.e., "wherever I'm needed," we can accommodate that, too.

All volunteers who are not members of the USS Republic will be asked to purchase a staff badge for $10.  This is a mere fraction of the at-the-door price of a full weekend membership and a great way to attend the convention on a budget.  Staff fees are applied to certain overhead expenses that are shared by all guests, volunteers and attendees such as badges, lanyards, audio/visual equipment rental, Internet connectivity fees and con suite refreshments.  Members of the USS Republic are exempt from the staff badge fee but must attend at least three (out of six) volunteer staff meetings.  Anyone who wishes to join the USS Republic should visit the "How to Join" page on the Republic's web site.  Staff badges may be purchased online at any staff meeting.

At the meeting, you will have the opportunity to meet many of Treklanta's senior directors, learn how the convention in general and your requested department in particular operate, and ask any questions you may have.

This meeting will be held at our host hotel, the Atlanta Marriott Buckhead Hotel & Conference Center.  PLEASE RSVP by clicking the "Yes" or "Going" button on our Facebook Event Page.  THANK YOU and we look forward to seeing you!

For more information about volunteering at Treklanta or to sign up for a particular department now, please visit the Volunteer web page on the Treklanta web site, and we look forward to seeing you at the next staff meeting!

ABOUT THE REPUBLIC
The USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988, at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia.  As of December 11, 2019, the Republic crew includes 27 members who are active members of STARFLEET in good standing.
The Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule of events for its members, but does not hold meetings on a consistently fixed date each month.
Because the USS Republic is a duly commissioned chapter of STARFLEET International and is bound and governed by its Constitution and By-Laws, membership in STARFLEET is a prerequisite for membership in the Republic.  STARFLEET membership dues are $5 for one person and Republic chapter dues are $10 ($15 total).  The Republic collects a single combined dues payment for both groups and remits the STARFLEET portion to them on the Republic member's behalf.  STARFLEET offers family discounts for additional members as shown below.  Additional information about membership options, amounts due for additional family members, payment options and instructions for other forms of payment is on the "How to Join" page of our award-winning web site.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Actor Aron Eisenberg Dies at 50
By Variety Staff
September 22, 2019
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine actor Aron Eisenberg, who played Nog in the 1990s series, died Saturday.  He was 50.
Eisenberg was a guest of honor at this year's Treklanta, held just four months before his death.
His character Nog, who appeared for all seven seasons, was a member of the alien race Ferengi, and joined Starfleet after a recommendation from Captain Sisko.  Eisenberg returned for a guest spot on Star Trek: Voyager and appeared in the Star Trek fan film Renegades.
His widow Malissa Longo wrote on Facebook, "He was so driven to put the best he had into whatever work was put before him.  He lived his life with such vigor and passion."
Eisenberg, who was born with one kidney, had received two kidney transplants.  The kidney trouble had stunted his growth, and he stood at 5 feet tall.
He had been married for nine months.  "We didn't officially announce that we had eloped on December 28, 2018.  We were hoping to have a big shindig in celebration of our nuptials, but had to wait to save up the money," Longo wrote.  "While our marriage, on paper, was a short one, our hearts had been married for far longer.  I will be forever thankful for the time we had to love each other.  Five years felt like a lifetime, in the best possible ways."
Eisenberg also appeared in the TV movie Amityville: The Evil Escapes and features The Liars' Club, Beverly Hills Brats, Playroom and The Horror Show.  He guested on TV shows including The Wonder Years, Parker Lewis Can't Lose and Tales from the Crypt.
In addition to Longo, he is survived by his mother and two sons.

Star Trek Writer D. C. Fontana Dies at 80
By Cynthia Littleton
December 3, 2019
Dorothy Catherine Fontana, a writer on the original Star Trek series who had a long association with the franchise, died December 2.  She was 80.
Fontana's death was confirmed by the official Star Trek web site, which described her as "the legendary writer who brought many of Star Trek's greatest episodes to life."  The web site reported that she died after a brief illness but offered no other details.
Fontana was active in the Writers Guild of America for many years and most recently worked as a lecturer for the American Film Institute.
A native of New Jersey, Fontana was the rare example of a female scribe on the original NBC edition of the enduring sci-fi franchise, although she used the gender-blind screen credit of "D. C. Fontana."  She was credited with creating key elements of the Star Trek mythos, including the details on the backstory of Mr. Spock's upbringing by his human mother Amanda and Vulcan father Sarek.
All told, Fontana had writing credits on 11 episodes of the original Star Trek, which ran for three seasons from 1966-69.  The list included the standout 1967 installments "Journey to Babel" (which introduces Spock's parents) and "This Side of Paradise" (in which Spock and other members of the Enterprise crew get goofy after being sprayed with flower spores).  Some of Fontana's episodes were credited to a pseudonym Michael Richards.
Fontana decided to mask her gender with her screen credit in order to avoid discrimination as she sought work in what was then a decidedly male-dominated business.  Her introduction to TV writing came after she landed a job as a secretary to Roddenberry in 1961.
"I wrote a Ben Casey spec script, with the byline 'D. C. Fontana,' " Fontana told NorthJersey.com in 2016.  "Figuring they can't turn me down because I'm a woman, because they wouldn't know.  And I had my agent turn it in, and it was bought.  From then on I thought, 'You know what, this is the best way to go.  I'm going to go with D. C. Fontana.'"
Fontana went on to work as a writer and associate producer on the 1970s animated Star Trek series.  In 1987 she teamed with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry to write "Encounter at Farpoint," the two-hour premiere episode for Star Trek: The Next Generation.  She wrote additional episodes of The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.  She also penned Star Trek-themed novels, including Questor Tapes and Vulcan's Glory.
Writers on the latest incarnation of the Star Trek universe—Star Trek: Discovery—paid tribute to Fontana, calling her "a huge part of the Trek family" in a tweet.
Earlier in her career, Fontana penned episodes of such series as The Wild Wild West and Ben Casey.  After the original Star Trek ended, she worked on a range of 1970s primetime series including The Streets of San Francisco, Bonanza, Kung Fu, The Six Million Dollar Man, Logan's Run, The Waltons and Dallas.
Fontana was feted for her years of service to the WGA with honorary awards in 1997 and 2002.
Fontana is survived by her husband, cinematographer Dennis Skotak.
