UPCOMING EVENTS
Dragon*Con Planning Meeting

6:00 p.m. Sunday, August 2, 2009
Fuddruckers Restaurant
240 Perimeter Center Parkway, Dunwoody GA  30346
(770) 399-6641
Yes, it's short notice—apologies for that—but all members and friends of the USS Republic are cordially invited to meet at the Fuddruckers restaurant in Dunwoody near Perimeter Mall at 6:00 p.m. this coming Sunday, August 2, for an extremely important dinner meeting to discuss, plan and coordinate the Republic's activities at Dragon*Con.  We'll first enjoy some of the "World's Greatest Hamburgers" (as well as chicken, fish and salad selections) and then get right to the business at hand.

What We're Doing at Dragon*Con
The USS Republic will have a recruitment table at the Atlanta Sheraton Hotel all four days of the convention, will march in the Dragon*Con Parade on Saturday morning and will be hosting TrekTrak's Happy Hour at Ten Forward dance party on Sunday night.  Just before we kick off Happy Hour, we would like to gather all Republic members in attendance in either Star Trek costume or Republic attire for a photo opportunity in the TrekTrak room (Atlanta Sheraton Savannah).

What We Need to Do at This Meeting
The Republic's recruitment table in the Sheraton must be staffed from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday.  The Republic will be sharing the table with TrekTrak and our friends aboard the IKAV Nemesis, who will also be helping with table staffing.  We'll have sign-up sheets for 1½-hour shifts and would like to be able to schedule a full complement of volunteers throughout the weekend.
ENS3 Joanne Trew is coordinating the Republic's participation in the Dragon*Con parade (see item below), and we heartily encourage everyone to come out on Saturday morning and march behind our banner!  Ensign Joanne will have more information about our first-ever Dragon*Con parade participation at this meeting.
Happy Hour at Ten Forward runs from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. in the TrekTrak programming room on Sunday night and, in addition to having DJ B-Naut on hand to keep the room a-hippin' and a-hoppin' with high-energy dance music, the Republic will also be offering hospitality, snacks and refreshments to partygoers.  We need volunteers to gather and set up snacks, to serve as hosts throughout the evening, and to break down and reset the room for programming the next morning.  We'll figure out who does what to help make this year's Happy Hour the very best ever!

Even if you're not planning to attend Dragon*Con, we hope you'll join us for a delicious meal during a fun-filled family-friendly evening with your USS Republic shipmates.  If you're planning to attend, please download and print this Fuddruckers Benefit Ticket and present it to the cashier when you place your order.  We look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

STARFLEET Bowling Challenge

Saturday, September 26, 2009
Time and Location to Be Announced
The Republic's Third Annual STARFLEET
Bowling Challenge, September 2008
Join the USS Republic for our Fourth Annual STARFLEET Bowling Challenge!  We've challenged the Klingon Assault Group and the Atlanta Regional Furries to meet us in the alley... we'll see who shows up!

The 2007 Bowling Challenge turned out to be a huge media event with lots of TV cameras and the 2008 Challenge (pictured above) was just as much fun.  We haven't yet selected a location for this year's Challenge, but save the date now and plan to wear your best Star Trek costume or your USS Republic sport shirt or chapter t-shirt for this fun-filled family-friendly event!
Centennial Park Picnic & Republic Brick Hunt

A Joint Event with the USS Atlanta
Sunday, October 11, 2009

Time to Be Announced

Fifteen years ago, the USS Republic purchased a personalized, inscribed brick for the brand new Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta.  We have a certificate in our chapter archives confirming its ownership and placement, but we do not have a photo of the brick itself.  On Sunday, October 11, members of the Republic and the USS Atlanta—many of whom were members of the Republic in the mid-1990s—will come together—our first official joint event—for an afternoon picnic in the park, a "brick hunt" (it won't be hard... we have a map indicating where it's located), and a group photo opportunity.  Specific details are still being worked out by Republic CO Captain Eric L. Watts and Atlanta CO Admiral Mike Henigan, but save the date now and plan to join us on Saturday, October 11, for a fun-filled day in historic Centennial Olympic Park!
Fourth Annual Halloween Spooktacular

Saturday, October 31, 2009
Time and Location to Be Announced
The Republic's Third Annual Halloween Spooktacular
October 2008
The USS Republic's Fourth Annual Halloween Spooktacular is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, but we have not yet confirmed a location for the event.  Any member or friend of the Republic who would be willing to host this event in their home should contact the Captain as soon as possible!

This will, of course, be a costume-encouraged event—and not necessarily Star Trek or science fiction costumes!  Save the date now!  Depending on where the event is held, it may be a potluck dinner and BYOB event... or maybe not!  Additional details to be announced.
NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
USS Republic to march in Dragon*Con parade
USS Republic and IKAV Nemesis members marching together at Atlanta's St. Patrick's Parade, March 2009

On Saturday, Sepember 5, the 8th Annual Dragon*Con Parade will take over downtown Atlanta.  Last year, over 2,000 costumed Dragon*Con members took over Peachtree Street and this year promises to be bigger.  Why?  Because this is the year that the USS Republic plans to make its very first showing in the Dragon*Con Parade!  Please put on your best Star Trek costume or USS Republic sport shirt (see below) and proudly march with your fellow crewmembers behind our full-color parade banner (seen above).  Signing up is easy at the Dragon*Con Parade YahooGroups.  After joining, click the Database link on the left, then click the "2009 Dragon*Con Parade Registration" link in the Tables list, then click "Add Record" to sign up!  Please note that you must be a member of Dragon*Con to march in the parade.  The deadline to register for the parade is August 15, 2009.

Let's show Atlanta why the USS Repubic is the largest STARFLEET chapter in the world!  Any questions regarding the Republic's participation in the Dragon*Con parade can be directed to ENS3 Joanne Trew at jmtrew@comcast.net.

USS Republic Forums web site now online!
Thanks entirely to the efforts of Ens Drew Schlosser, the USS Republic's Forums web site is now not only online and fully functional, but can also be easily found at the nifty new web address of www.ussrepublic.info!  The Forums site is a new online community where our membership can log in, create a variety of topics for discussion, post messages and announcements and, best of all, not have such messages emailed to every member subscribed to our members-only YahooGroups message board!  The Forums site has been inaugurated with twelve different topics dealing mostly with various aspects of Star Trek.  Sometime soon, some additonal topics will be added that are more chapter-specific.  All members are encouraged to visit the site, register and get the discussions going!  And be sure to thank Ens Drew Schlosser for his excellent work!
USS Exeter files activity report for June
Commander John R. Sims, Commanding Officer of the USS Exeter NCC-1706, submitted the following report for June 2009:

This past month was kind of slow.  After all the hustle and bustle of the
Star Trek movie premiere and all the other activities, we decided to take a rest.  We did stay in touch seeing as a lot of us work for the same company.

We would like to welcome our four new members to the
Exeter and the Fleet.  They are: Alex O'Conner and his father Barry, Macauley McMenemy and Becci Bradbury.  The last two are from the Unitd Kingdom and are from the city to which this ship gets its namesake... Exeter!

We will be having a dinner meeting at the Golden Corral on Sunday, July 5, at 6:00 p.m.  Hopefully all of the new members can attend and get to meet their new shipmates.

As of July 4, the USS Exeter crew included twelve STARFLEET members in good standing.  Visit the Exeter's web site here.
Last call to order new Republic sport shirts
Members of the Republic look great in our embroidered sport shirts on Georgia Public Broadcasting last December
Detail of our embroidered sport shirts--click to enlarge
We're preparing to place an order for our popular chapter sport shirts—a high-quality collared shirt with a black yoke, collar and sleeves with a royal blue torso, reminiscent of the Voyager-style STARFLEET uniform—with the Republic's red, blue, yellow and black logo embroidered on the left breast.  These shirts have been very popular at Republic events and activities where full Star Trek costumes aren't necessary or appropriate.

It was previously announced that we needed a minimum order of ten shirts in order to make them affordable for our members, but with Dragon*Con now only a month away, we're going to combine our order with the TrekTrak volunteer staff order and also make them available to members of Region 2, so we no longer need to wait for ten Republic members to place orders.  Available in all sizes from Small to 3XL, these great-looking shirts are available for only $40.00 each (plus $5.00 shipping, if needed).  The deadline to place your order is Friday, August 14.  Payment options and instructions can be found in our Ship's Store.  Don't miss your chance to get this great-looking shirt!
Badges and calendars and DVDs, oh my!
The USS Republic's Ship's Store has plenty of merchandise still available.  Help stimulate your chapter's economy by purchasing one or more of these exclusive, custom-made, Republic-branded items that are the envy of all other Region 2 chapters.

Our very own, custom-designed chapter comm badges, designed and created by Capt Michael Cowart, feature the Republic's "Delta Shield/Capital R" logo rendered in a Deep Space Nine/Voyager-style comm badge that can be worn with your Next Generation-era style uniform.  Each badge is individually cast in urethane resin and painted by hand to closely resemble the silver and bronze colors of comm badges actually used on the modern Star Trek series.  Available in your choice of traditional butterfly clutch (most secure) for $10.00 each or magnetic backing (won't harm fabric) for $12.00 each, these unique chapter comm badges will be a perfect addition to your uniform for all future chapter events.  Show your pride in the Republic and visit the Republic's Ship's Store to order yours now!

LAST CHANCE!  HALF-PRICE Calendars!  Printed in full color and on heavyweight card stock, drilled and comb-bound for easy wall-hanging, the USS Republic's 2009 calendars feature twelve photos from the Republic's highest-profile events and activities from 2008, as well as member birthdays, federal holidays, major religious and seasonal observances, and most Atlanta-area science fiction convention dates.  THE calendar for all your fannish needs, this full-sized (10¾" x 17"), limited edition calendar, regularly priced at $10.00, can now be yours for only $5.00 postpaid.  All remaining unsold calendars will be given away to new members who join the Republic at Dragon*Con, so this really is your last chance to get yours before they're gone forever!  Visit the Ship's Store to order yours now!

GPB Pledge Drive DVDs: We came, we answered phones, we conquered!  Twenty-one members and friends of the USS Republic answered phones for two hours during Georgia Public Broadcasting's live semi-annual Pledge Drive on Saturday, December 6... and we've got it on DVD!  See Capt Eric L. Watts be interviewed on live TV!  See Ens Eddie Hines ham it up for the cameras!  See two fully ridged Klingons try to hold phones to their heads!  See it all for only $5.00 per each postpaid DVD!  In addition to 40 minutes of televised Republic samaritanism, this four-hour DVD also includes the last half-hour of Celtic Woman–The Greatest Journey: Essential Collection; Victor Borge: 100 Years of Music & Laughter! (1½ hrs); Yanni Voices (30 min.) and the first hour of My Music: My Generation–The 60s, hosted by Michelle Phillips.  Visit the Ship's Store to order yours now!

Congratulations to ENS2 Lea Hepler, whose entry in the STARFLEET Star Trek Short Story Writer's Contest, "A Chance to Win," has been selected as one of six finalists among the twenty-one entries received.  Those six entries will be judged and ranked by renowned Star Trek author and editor (and perennial Dragon*Con guest/TrekTrak panelist) Keith R. A. DeCandido.  The winning story will be published in an upcoming issue of the STARFLEET Communiqué and the winning author will receive prizes ranging from a $10 STARFLEET Quartermaster's Store gift certificate to a flash drive valued at $25.  Good luck, Ensign Lea!
Congratulations to ENS2 Zannetta Law for walking 8 kilometers (five miles!) in the 5th Annual Pink Ribbon Walk, a breast cancer awareness and fundraising event for Sisters... By Choice, on Saturday, July 18, at Stone Mountain Park.  Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Georgia women and the second highest cause of their death.  Every year, hundreds gather on Stone Mountain to raise funds for the Mobile Breast Clinic, which travels throughout Georgia to help medically under-served women gain access to quality breast care.
Please join Ensign Brenda Pruitt (Executive Director), ENS2 Michael Shipley (Bass) and Captain Eric L. Watts (Bass) for the Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus' summer concert, "Lush Life: The Music of Billy Strayhorn" on Saturday, August 1, at Symphony Hall at the Woodruff Arts Center.  A joint concert with Jazz Orchestra Atlanta and in partnership with the National Black Arts Festival, this one-night-only event features the 100-voice AGMC with tenor John Wesley Wright, actress Donzaleigh Abernathy, vocalist L’Tanya Moore and a fourteen-piece jazz orchestra.  Click here to purchase your ticket!

Orci Talks About Linking Next Two Star Trek Movies; Saldana Says Script "Half Done"
July 25, 2009
by Anthony Pascale
All indications from Paramount over the last few months have shown they are anxious to keep the ball rolling with the Trek franchise and get another movie out ASAP. Now it appears they planning for the long term and want the creative team to be thinking two steps ahead. The latest news comes from a comment from Bob Orci at Comic Con. Also at Comic Con, Zoe Saldana says the next Star Trek script is ‘half done.’
The new Star Trek trilogy takes shape
The latest indication of forward thinking comes from a comment made by Star Trek co-writer Roberto Orci at a party at Comic Con. When asked if he could give an update on the latest meeting with Paramount about the next film, he said:
Nothing was decided [at the last meeting]. It was really about, hmmm. You know what, I’ll give you a tidbit. [They said to us] "We thought maybe you could do that as like 2 and 3."
This is actually not the first time Orci has talked about the third film from the new team. Back in June he told Collider that the team were thinking about linking the next two films, saying:
In terms of thinking about more than one movie, we want the movie to be self-contained in a way, but we’re discussing the idea of having a couple of threads where if the second movie works, you could pick up into a cohesive whole.
At the time Orci cited the Spock/McCoy ‘remember’ scene in Star Trek II, which was picked up in Star Trek III.
Of course it has been reported before that the new crew are all up for options for two additional films, so it makes sense for the studio to be thinking long-term. Studio bosses have been touting Trek as one of their key franchises moving forward.
The question now is, how far will they take this link between the second and third films? An extreme case would be to go as far as filming them back to back, which has been done before, like with the Lord of the Rings films or the last two Back to the Future films. One thing is for sure, it looks like there is more Trek in our future.
Saldana Says new script half-way done
And in another development, Zoe Saldana (Uhura) tells SciFi Wire that the script is "half-way done." This doesn’t mesh with what the writers have been saying, but Saldana offered this:
I do know that they are germinating a script. That’s what they told us a month and a half ago, which actually means—in that kind of talk it means that they’re probably halfway done with a script. They just can’t present it to anybody. But they’re very excited, and there is a lot of pressure, because now it’s like, "Oh, do you do The Wrath of Khan or do you do this or whatever?"
Saldana also noted she believed production for the second Star Trek film would commence in 2010. Others, including Bruce Greenwood (Pike) have also suggested a Summer 2010 timeframe for production on the Star Trek: Something Something sequel.

Star Trek Sequel Shooting Next March?
July 27, 2009
by Anthony Pascale
In another brief Comic Con interview, Zoe Saldana talked to MTV about the next Star Trek movie. She was non-committal on the subject of Khan, but noted that she is already being asked about her availability next year.
March?
The latest “Star Trek: Something Something” news comes from a brief intreview by MTV at San Diego Comic Con (where Saldana was promoting the upcoming Avatar movie). She says she has been asked (by the producers) "What are you doing?" in March, June and September. Saldana says she is free “whenever” they “come callin.’”
As we have reported before, Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman have said that they and Damon Lindelof are expected to have the script finished by Christmas. Although the pre-production for the fist new Star Trek movie lasted around nine months, the second one should go much faster as there will be much less casting and much of the production design, construction, costumes, etc. is already completed. According to TrekMovie sources, Paramount is hoping to have the next Star Trek film out May 2011. But no official announcements have been made, and as we saw with the first film, things can always get changed in Hollywood.

First Act of Animated Starship Farragut Released
July 23, 2009
by Anthony Pascale
Editor's Note: The USS Republic screened Starship Farragut's first episode, "The Captaincy," in May 2007.  Members of the cast and crew will be appearing on this year's TrekTrak.
Starship Farragut, a TOS-era fan production, has set a fan film milestone by being the first to produce both live action and animated episodes. The first part of their first animated episode was released this week. TrekMovie talked to the Farragut producers to get all the latest news and details on what’s next.
Farragut gets animated
The guys at Farragut Films and NEO f/x decided that the time had come for fan films to go to the second dimension, so they set out to recreate the look of Star Trek: The Animated Series, but with the crew of the TOS-era fan film Star Trek [sic] Farragut. The Farragut cast provides the voice work, and NEO f/x uses CGI to lovingly recreate the Filmation style of TAS.
For their first episode, "Power Source," they even have some famous guest stars doing some voice work (Chase Masterson and Chris Doohan). The episode is about the USS Farragut dispatched to meet up with the USS Azrael (a single-nacelle Saladin class ship), only to find out that the Azreal’s captain is under the influence of alien technology. Although they are set on board the USS Farragut, the animated show ties into TAS by incorporating the character Thelin (voiced by Doohan), who was the Andorian first officer of the USS Enterprise in an alternative timeline (TAS "Yesteryear").
Each episode of Starship Farragut: The Animated Episodes will fit into the original TAS half-hour structure (but without the commercials). The first act is now available online at the official site (farragut-animated.com).
Farragut Animated producer Michael Struck tells TrekMovie that Act 2 of "Power Source" should be released on August 3rd and the final act by the end of August. They are also hoping to have all three acts of their second episode "The Needs of the Many" out by the end of the year (again split into three act releases). That episode will tell the story of Capt. Carter of the Farragut facing the same Gorn Captain Kirk fought in "Arena." It will also feature the guest voice of Tim Russ.
Starship Farragut Update
As for the live-action part of the Farragut family, besides doing voice work for the animated show, the focus this year has been on building their own sets located in St. Mary’s, Georgia (previous Farragut productions have mostly used the Star Trek: New Voyages sets). Farragut Films plans to have sets for the bridge, transporter room, captain’s quarters, corridor and shuttlecraft ready in time to shoot their next episode in early 2010. In April, they held an open house to their new facility.
Farragut producer/star John Broughton tells TrekMovie.com he hopes to release their fifth production, a full-length episode titled "Damn the Torpedoes," by the end of 2010. Here is a synopsis of "Damn the Torpedoes":
The USS Farragut is bringing a Federation diplomat, retired Admiral Glasgow, to negotiate a truce. When the Admiral’s shuttlecraft disappears into a mined asteroid field, with other diplomats aboard, Captain Carter and his crew must find a way to rescue them without starting an interstellar war!
Farragut also made some news last month, winning the Best Fan Film award for the second year in a row at the Wrath of Con science fiction conference and film festival in Panama City Beach, Florida. It was awarded for their latest production, the "Crew Log" half-length episode “A Rock and a Hard Place,” which you can download at starshipfarragut.com.
