Mission to X-Men: First Class
Saturday, June 4, 2011
Time and Location To Be Announced |
X-Men:
First Class, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts
the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles
Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender)
took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young
men discovering their powers for the first time. Before
they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working
together, with other mutants (some familiar, some new) to
stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In
the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal
war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.
Make plans now to join the USS Republic on its "away
mission" to see this highly anticipated prequel to the
first three now-class X-Men films. Theaters and
showtimes have not yet been announced, but save the date and
plan on an early evening showing.

Mission to Green Lantern
Saturday, June 18, 2011
Time and Location To Be Announced |
In
a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful
force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace
and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A
brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order,
each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers.
But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy
the balance of power in the universe, their fate and the fate
of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first
human ever selected: Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds).
Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns
have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the
infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly
the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination
and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has
ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow
pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively),
if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage
to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key
to defeating Parallax… he will become the greatest Green Lantern
of all.
Make plans now to join the USS Republic on its "away
mission" to see this summer's only movie from DC Comics. Theaters
and showtimes have not yet been announced, but save the date
and plan on an early evening showing.

Mission to Captain America: The First Avenger
Saturday, July 23, 2011
Time and Location To Be Announced |
Born
during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) grew
up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by
the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired
to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty
and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy’s
earnest plea, Col. Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones) offered
Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment…
Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was
at last administered the "Super-Soldier Serum" and
bombarded by "vita-rays." Steve Rogers emerged
from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be
and still be human. Rogers was then put through
an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three
months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain
America. Armed with his indestructible shield and battle
savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil
both as a sentinel of liberty and leader of the Avengers.
Make plans now to join the USS Republic on its "away
mission" to see this highly anticipated moviethe
fourth and latest in Marvel Studios' series of films featuring
members of the classic Avengers. Theaters and showtimes
have not yet been announced, but save the date and plan on

Project
Legacy: Phase II: 3,300+ Republic photos now on Flickr |
The
USS Republic's Project Legacy was first announced
in the May
2009 issue of The Republiqué, when Phase
I was finally completed. Phase I was the scanning
of more than 50 chapter newsletters published by the Republic
from 1988 to 2003 and uploading those newsletters as PDF documents
to the Republic's web site, archiving for posterity
the chapter's long and illustrious history... in written form. Those
newsletters can be located on the web site's News
& Newsletters page. It
was also announced that Phase II "...will be scanning
and uploading to the Republic's web site the many dozens
of photographs taken of various chapter activities during
our first ten years."
The
USS Republic is pleased to announce that Project
Legacy: Phase II, in the nearly two years since it was
first announced, has not only grown tremendously in the scope
of its eventual goal, but is also well on its way to completion. Rather
than uploading a handful of photos of each and every chapter
event to the Republic's Photo
Gallery
web pagewhich is a tedious, labor-intensive and time-consuming
chorethe Republic has, instead, created a Flickr
account for all of our historical, current and future chapter
activity photos. In the last two weeks, more than
three thousand, three hundred photos of Republic
events and activities have been uploaded to our Flickr
account, organized by event name and date for chronological
sequencing.
Perhaps the most awesome benefit of the Republic having
a Flickr
account is that now, each and every member who takes photos
of chapter events and activities can now share them with their
shipmatesand the world!by uploading them to our
Flickr
account. Over the last few years, many of our members
and friends have uploaded photos of Republic events
and activities to their own private Facebook pages, with limited
circulation. Now, every member can share
every photo with everyone!
This is undoubtedly the most significant increase in the Republic's
online presence since our web site went online in 2006 and
is a huge advancement in the archiving and preserving the
Republic's history for posterity. In the
coming weeks, while Republic command continues to upload
photos from the late 1980s and early 1990s to our Flickr
account (check out the half-dozen photos of the Republic's
1988 commissioning ceremony!), all members and friends are
encouraged to add their own photos of previous and future
events to the account in the "sets" created specifically
for each event. There are currently more than 100
sets of photos taken of Republic events since 2006.

ABOUT
THE REPUBLIC
|
The
USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned
as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988,
at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia. After
22½ years and multiple name changes, the Republic
was decommissioned by STARFLEET in November 2010. The
Republic operated as an independent organization
until April 2011. Effective April 9, 2011,
STARFLEET recognizes the "USS Republic - STARFLEET
Registry: NX-1371, a Constitution-Class, Enterprise-Subclass
Heavy Cruiser... as a Meeting chapter in Shakedown Cruise."
As of May 1, the Republic crew includes 45
members who are active members of STARFLEET in good
standing.
The Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule
of events for its members, frequently partnering with
other local science fiction groups in the Atlanta area
for joint activities, but does not hold meetings on a
consistently fixed date each month.
Because the USS Republic is a (soon-to-be once
again) duly commissioned chapter of STARFLEET International
and is bound and governed by its Constitution and By-Laws,
membership in STARFLEET is a prerequisite for membership
in the Republic. Combined annual dues
for both groups are $25 per person and is collected by
the chapter (family discounts are available with certain
conditions and restrictions). Membership in the
Republic includes access to our YahooGroups message
board, voting privileges in chapter elections and a personalized
laminated membership card which entitles the member to
discounts and rebates on products and services offered
by our Member Benefits Program partners. Additional
information on Republic membership and how to join
is on our award-winning web site.

Damon
Lindelof on Star Trek Sequel Writing Process, Secrecy
& Nerding Out on Trek |
By
Anthony Pascale
May 2, 2011
|
Star Trek sequel co-writer/producer Damon Lindelof
is a guest on this week’s popular Nerdist podcast with Chris
Harwick. The hour-long podcast covers a lot of ground
with a little bit of Star Trek. Of interest
was Lindelof talking about what writing is like for him
in the post-Lost era where he no longer is working
with Carlton Cuse and a writers room: |
"I function best in collaboration so I have sought
out writing partners. On Trek 1, I produced
it, but was obviously very involved in the story process
with J. J. [Abrams], Bob [Orci] and Alex [Kurtzman], so
that was great. For Trek 2 I am actually writing,
but again it functions a lot more like a TV show. We
are all sitting in a room together throwing ideas around
and seeing what sticks. I do not like sitting
by myself staring at the blank page." |
Damon also talked about dealing with the secrecy on Lost
and Star Trek: |
"It’s tough. J. J. is really good at secrecy
and really good at playing the game because ultimately people
want to know but they don’t want to have stuff spoiled for
them. We are working on Trek 2 now and
there is such an expectation that it is top secret, because
everything we do is top secret. And with that expectation
comes this idea that "they are going to do something that
is totally mind-blowing that is going to friggin’ fry our
brains!" Because we are keeping it such a secret. As
opposed to the fact that we are just keeping it a secret
because we don’t want the audience to know too much going
in. The fact that people went to go to see Trek
and they didn’t know we were going to blow up Vulcan. They
might have known that time travel was involved and they
knew that Nimoy was in the movie, but they didn’t understand
how it all worked so when you get to that point in the movie
it’s cool because you get to emotionally experience it without
being primed for it. It requires a tremendous amount
ofthere are only so many people you can include in
your circle of trust." |
Damon also talked about being able to write what he called
"professional fan fiction," in some of his favorite franchises,
and specifically noting on Star Trek: |
"That is the coolest thing ever is playing in those
universes and writing 'Kirk' and dialog, and you are like
'oh my god!' It was particularly awesome writing foras
he was slugged in the script'ORIGINAL SPOCK.' Because
you are like 'Nimoy is actually going to say these words!'" |
The podcast also contains some talk about how "awesome"
the Star Trek movie was, with Chris Hardwick talking
about going to see the movie with his friend Wil Wheaton.
Listen to the full Nerdist Podcast with Damon Lindelof
at Nerdist.com, to hear Damon talk more about Twitter, his
favorite TV shows, how he got his start with J. J. Abrams
and Lost, nerding out meeting George Lucas, and more.

Urban: Star Trek Sequel Shooting Starting in September
or November |
By
Anthony Pascale
May 2, 2011
|
Star Trek’s new Dr. Leonard McCoy says filming could
start as late as November 2011. |
Urban: Star Trek sequel production maybe as late
as November
Talking to Collider, Urban offered this update on the Star
Trek sequel: |
Do you know when you start filming [the Star Trek
sequel]?
"I am hearing it’s going to be maybe September or November
this year."
Do you think J. J. [Abrams] will be back?
"I certainly hope so. He’s a phenomenal director
and we had such a great time working with him on the first
one so I really hope so." |
Recent reports have been talking about a September start
date, but Urban’s November comment may be of concern. Starting
that late certainly raises questions as to whether or not
the Star Trek sequel could meet a June 29, 2012 release
date, and it also would run afoul of Paramount’s reported
plans to start shooting the next Jack Ryan movie (starring
Chris Pine) in January 2012. |
We will probably learn more within a few weeks as J. J.
Abrams will be doing publicity for Super 8, opening
June 10. |
|
Damon Lindelof: In “Midst” of Star Trek Sequel Script
|
By
Anthony Pascale
May 1, 2011
|
Lindelof: In midst of Star Trek sequel script
This week, DC Comics celebrated the 900th issue of their
Superman Action Comics by bringing on some big named
guest writers, including Dark Knight scribe David
Goyer, Superman: The Movie director Richard Donner
and Lost / Star Trek writer/producer Damon
Lindelof. Lindelof did an interview promoting the
issue with CBR, mostly focusing on the comic, but there
was this tiny Star Trek scripting tidbit. |
And now you’re knee deep in the script and story for
Star Trek 2, correct?
"Yes. We’re in the midst of writing the script
and we’re looking forward to making it." |
This again confirms our reporting that the first draft for
script for the Star Trek sequel is still not considered
complete. We also know that Damon is not currently
holed up with his Star Trek sequel writing partners
Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, because this morning Lindelof
notified his followers on Twitter that he has returned to
London for the second time this year. |
