Atlanta Staff & Staff Recruitment Meeting
4:30
p.m. Sunday, October 23, 2011
Holiday Inn Atlanta Perimeter Restaurant
4386 Chamblee-Dunwoody Road, Atlanta GA 30341
|
|
TrekTrax
Atlanta (TXA) is the Star Trek convention
in Atlanta presented by the USS Republic. After
a successful first convention in February 2011, plans are
well underway for our second convention in April 2012. We
are now welcoming back returning staff members and recruiting
new ones. You do not have to be a member of the Republic
to volunteer for TXA staff.
The first TXA
2012 volunteer staff meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. on
Sunday, October 23,
at our host hotel, the Holiday Inn Atlanta Perimeter at
4386 Chamblee-Dunwoody Road. Anyone who is interested
in serving on staff as a volunteer, whether or not you are
a member of the Republic, should plan to attend this
meeting. The restaurant will start serving at
4:30 in case anyone would like to eat or have drinks.
We will use this meeting to discuss some of the planning
already underway and still in development, as well as assigning
folks to departments. We want some people assigned
out to departments early so they can help with planning
of their individual department. There are going
to be some operational changes this year along with realigning
some departments. We will discuss these changes at
the meeting.
The mean and nasty (in a loving way) Klingons are going
to be a much bigger part of the con this year (see News
item below). This will affect some of what we are
doing. There will also be time to hear input
from last year's staffers.
This is going to be a great year for TXA. Last year
we received many compliments from folks on how smooth the
operations were. We want to make it even better and
you are part of that.
There is a nominal staff fee to help cover some basic per-person
overhead expenses (program book, badge, con suite, etc.). The
fee for members of the USS Republic whose membership dues
are current is only $5.00. The fee for all others,
both new and returning, is $10.00. Cash and checks
will be accepted at the meeting. Staff members
who plan to stay at the hotel during the convention are
encouraged to make their hotel reservations online through
the TXA
web site.
Please RSVP to Barry
Bynum. We look forward to seeing you soon!

TrekTrax
Atlanta receives international KAG endorsement
|
TrekTrax
Atlanta is pleased to announce that we have been officially
endorsed by the Klingon
Assault Group International as the official National
Klingon Konvention. The Klingon Assault Group (KAG)
is a not-for-profit Star Trek fan organization based
on communication and cooperation. KAG is international
in scope, with ships and members from all parts of the globe. There
are several KAG ships in the greater Atlanta area.
This endorsement comes directly from Thought Admiral Krikor
epetai-jechwI' (Krikor Ajemian), the top man of the
organization. Many thanks go to Dark Moon Fleet
Commander Admiral Kolex zantai-QIHqem (Darren Carter)
for assisting TXA with this endorsement. As part
of this endorsement, KAG will help promote TXA to its members
around the world, and TXA in turn will offer a special membership
discount to KAG members. The TXA web site will
be updated with this information soon. |
Computer
failure at Republic headquarters |
USS
Republic CO Capt Eric L. Watts' home computer
suffered a hard drive crash in late September and had to be
replaced with a completely new system. Transferring
all the data from the old computer to the new one, reinstalling
the many software programs and some other minor related issues
caused, among many other things, this issue of The Republiqué
to be a couple of weeks late getting out. Operations
have, for the most part, been restored and things should be
back on schedule by the end of October. |

ABOUT
THE REPUBLIC
|
The
USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned
as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988,
at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia. After
22½ years and multiple name changes, the Republic
was decommissioned by STARFLEET in November 2010. The
Republic operated as an independent organization
until April 2011. Effective April 9, 2011,
STARFLEET recognizes the "USS Republic - STARFLEET
Registry: NX-1371, a Constitution-Class, Enterprise-Subclass
Heavy Cruiser... as a Meeting chapter in Shakedown Cruise."
As of October 3, the Republic crew includes 36
members who are active members of STARFLEET in good
standing.
The Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule
of events for its members, frequently partnering with
other local science fiction groups in the Atlanta area
for joint activities, but does not hold meetings on a
consistently fixed date each month.
Because the USS Republic is a (soon-to-be once
again) duly commissioned chapter of STARFLEET International
and is bound and governed by its Constitution and By-Laws,
membership in STARFLEET is a prerequisite for membership
in the Republic. Combined annual dues
for both groups are $25 per person and is collected by
the chapter (family discounts are available with certain
conditions and restrictions). Membership in the
Republic includes access to our YahooGroups message
board, voting privileges in chapter elections and a personalized
laminated membership card which entitles the member to
discounts and rebates on products and services offered
by our Member Benefits Program partners. Additional
information on Republic membership and how to join
is on our award-winning web site.

Star
Trek: Phase II Production Update |
by
Anthony Pascale
October 6, 2011
|
In
June, the Star Trek: Phase II team began production
on "Mind-Sifter," which will be the 10th episode for the
popular fan series. "Mind-Sifter" is based on
a story by Star Trek Welcommittee founder Shirley
S. Maiewski about Kirk having his memory erased by the Klingons
and sent back to 1950s Earth. The episode features
the return of John Carrigan as Kargh and the introduction
of the Star Trek animated series character "Ensign
Walking Bear," portrayed by Wayne W. Johnson. |
"Mind-Sifter" also introduced a new Dr. McCoy to Phase
II now that their original actor (and real-life doctor)
John Kelley has moved on to other projects. To replace
him, Phase II has brought in David Sherin, an experienced
local actor from Syracuse, NY. |
Phase II Post-Production Update + Next Episode
announced
Patty Wright from Star Trek: Phase II has also
provided TrekMovie with an update on all their episodes
currently in post-production. The next episode to
be released will be "The Child" (episode 7), which has just
been sent off for final audio mix. Following
up will be the Klingon-focused episode "Kitumba" (episode
8) which is currently being edited with Tobias Richter/The
Light Works providing the visual effects, which are quite
extensive, including scenery extensions and replacing whole
sets. Both "The Child" and a rough edit of "Kitumba"
will be shown later this month at ICon 2011, the annual
Israeli Sci-Fi Festival. "Origins" (episode 9),
Phase II’s take on Kirk’s early years, is next in
the post-production queue with VFX work already started.
|
"Mind-Sifter," currently in production, will follow "Origins"
as Phase II’s 10th episode. The ship-board
scenes were shot in June and in 2012 they will do the location
shooting. And Phase II has already picked their
next episode to shoot. Their 11th episode will be
"Bread and Savagery," which is currently in preproduction.
Principal photography on this sequel to "Bread and
Circuses" will begin in 2012. The author of the script
has not been announced yet. |
