Just For Lovers: Members and friends of the USS Republic---singles
and couples alike---met for a barbecue dinner on Valentine's
Day in 2010.
|
Single
and alone on Valentine's Day (or at least, on the weekend
just before)? Don't be! Make plans now to join
the USS Republic and USS Atlanta for an evening
of fun and friendship at the Republic's third Valentine's
Day Lonely Hearts Dinner at---of all places---the latest addition
to Grant Park's growing restaurant neighborhood: the Republic
Social House!
Located at the corner of Memorial Drive and Cherokee Avenue
across the street from the historic Oakland
Cemetery and easily accessible by MARTA,
the Republic Social House features a number of reasonably
priced gourmet melts, juicy burgers and a large selection
of beers and liquors. Hamburgers with a side are
as little as $5.15 and most other dinners are in the $8 to
$9 range. Captains Eric L. Watts and Matt
Ebeling had dinner there this past weekend and were impressed
by the restaurant's friendly staff and ambience. (Yes,
you can bring a date, and yes, couples and families are also
welcome!)
Please RSVP
the Captain if you plan to attend so we can arrange
for sufficient group seating.
Note: At our request, Republic Social House management
has agreed to waive their published policy of an 18% gratuity
on a single group check for parties of 6 or more and will
issue separate checks to each of us so we can avoid the problems
we've had settling a group check at some of our previous dinner
events. We appreciate their willingness to work
with us on this matter, so please be generous with your tip
when you settle your check. Thanks to Friend of
the Republic Arthur Graves for suggesting the Republic
Social House for this event!

The USS
Republic, host of TrekTrax
Atlanta,
will be hosting room parties on Saturday evening at two conventions
this month to promote ours. CO Capt Eric L.
Watts will be travelling to Chattanooga, Tennessee, in
two weeks for Con
Nooga and will then be at our sister convention, AnachroCon,
later this month here in Atlanta. In addition to
a room party on Saturday night, we will also have a fan table
at AnachroCon the entire weekend (we're still working on trying
to get one for Con Nooga). If you are planning
to attend or are considering attending either of these conventions,
we would very much appreciate your support. We
need the most help at Con Nooga. In
addition to marketing materials, decorations, party supplies,
light snacks and a selection of adult beverages, we also need
assistance simply talking to folks about TrekTrax Atlanta
and encouraging them to purchase a membership. Donations
of these items, or funds to help us purchase them, would be
greatly appreciated. If you can help us in any
way, either by attending these conventions with us or donating
items or funds for them, please contact
the Captain. Thank you! |

Republic
and IKAV Nemesis members last marched together
in the 2010 Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade.
|
For
the third year since 2009, the USS Republic will
march in Atlanta's St. Patrick's Parade. Always
held on Saturday, this year's parade will actually be held
on the traditional date of St. Patrick's Day, March 17. This
year, we'll be joined by members of the USS Atlanta
behind our awesome parade banner in a strong showing of
Star Trek solidarity!
2012
will be the largest, best-attended St. Patrick's Parade
& Festival since the first Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade
held 154 years ago, in 1858. The parade begins
at 12:00 noon, runs 1.1 miles starting from Peachtree Street
and Ralph McGill Boulevard, proceeding down Peachtree past
Woodruff Park, then left on Decatur Street to Pryor Street
and right on Pryor through Underground Atlanta and the huge
Underground Atlanta Festival where there will be free entertainment
and vendors.
The 2012 Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade will have over 200
units, including clowns, floats, bands of every kind, military
units, bagpipe and drum corps, thousands of children, Irish
dancers, clowns, high-tech firefighting equipment, police
units, drill teams, dogs, horses, antique cars, dignitaries
from Ireland and our own government leaders. Join
us for a great day and for a grand time as we celebrate
Atlanta and her Irish Heritage in 2012.
Please contact
the Captain as soon as possible if you're planning
to join us so we can have a reasonably accurate idea of
how many to expect. This is a costume-encouraged
event, so please plan to wear your Republic chapter
sport shirt, chapter t-shirt or your best Star Trek
costume. If you don't care to march with us,
consider coming out with your camera and cheering for us
as we go by!

ABOUT
THE REPUBLIC
|
The
USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned
as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988,
at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia. As
of February 5, 2012, the Republic crew includes 33
members who are active members of STARFLEET in good
standing. |
The
Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule
of events for its members, frequently partnering with other
local science fiction groups in the Atlanta area for joint
activities, but does not hold meetings on a consistently
fixed date each month. |
Because
the USS Republic is a duly commissioned chapter
of STARFLEET International and is bound and governed by
its Constitution and By-Laws, membership in STARFLEET
is a prerequisite for membership in the Republic. Combined
annual dues for both groups are $25 per person and is
collected by the chapter (family discounts are available
with certain conditions and restrictions). Membership
in the Republic includes access to our YahooGroups
message board, voting privileges in chapter elections
and a personalized laminated membership card which entitles
the member to discounts and rebates on products and services
offered by our Member Benefits Program Partners. Additional
information on Republic membership and how to join
and reenlist is on our award-winning web site.

Bryan
Fuller & Bryan Singer Talking About Teaming Up for Star
Trek TV Show |
By
Anthony Pascale
February 3, 2012
|
TrekMovie
has previously reported that both Bryan Singer (director
of X-Men, Valkyrie; producer for House)
and Bryan Fuller (writer for Star Trek Voyager, creator
of Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls and Dead
Like Me) have both (separately) shown interest in bringing
Star Trek back to the small screen. As it happens,
the two fans of Star Trek are working together on
a reboot of The Munsters (now titled Mockingbird
Lane) for NBC. |
And
now AICN is reporting that the two have "discussed
the possibility of pooling their resources to take a new
corner of Gene Roddenberry's multiverse to the small screen."
|
It
is interesting to learn that the two are now thinking about
Star Trek together. That being said, it appears
that there are currently no plans at CBS to bring Star
Trek back to TV in the short term. Indications
are that such a project would not even be considered until
after at the release of two Star Trek films from
J. J. Abrams, if not three. |
The
previously reported approaches for the two regarding Star
Trek have been very different. In 2005 and early
2006, Singer was involved in a plan to pitch CBS and Paramount
on a new show set in the year 3000 with a Federation in
turmoil trying to return to the glory days. That
plan was shelved before pitching to CBS once it was announced
in 2006 that J. J. Abrams would be making a new Star
Trek feature. Also, in 2007, Singer told TrekMovie
that his schedule really didn't have room for a Star
Trek TV show. Fuller has also spoken a few times
about his desire to return to the world of Star Trek
on TV. A couple of years back, TrekMovie spoke to
Bryan Fuller about his idea for a show, which he envisioned
would be set in the new movie universe, but not on board
the USS Enterprise. |
There
are a lot of challenges for bringing Star Trek back
to television. Genre shows have always struggled on
network TV. In addition, a space-based sci-fi series
is a costly endeavor. This cost issue is what has
kept LucasFilm from moving forward on plans for a live-action
Star Wars TV series (recently revealed to be titled
Star Wars: Underworld), although they hope to be
able to make it work sometime this decade. And then
there are the multiple parties involved, with CBS owning
Star Trek on TV, but Paramount owning assets and
rights related to the new Star Trek films (which
would be needed if a series was set in that universe). |
With
such an expensive, complicated and potentially risky endeavor,
it is certain that CBS would want some big name creative
talents behind the show like Singer and Fuller, so that
could only help to make it happen. |
I
want my Trek TV |
I
have often said that television is where Star Trek
is at its best, and so I am hopeful this project grows into
something. And there are others in Hollywood who would
be interested in bringing Star Trek back to TV, including
former Star Trek: Enterprise runner Manny Coto (currently
working on Dexter). However, with the new movies
going at Paramount, I know that Trek on TV will likely
have to wait. One caveat to that is an animated series.
I think, like with Star Wars: The Clone Wars,
such a show could be used to tie in with the new movies
and tell stories between films (not unlike the new Star
Trek ongoing comic books). Star Trek co-writers
Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have talked about such a
project, but there has been no real talks so far to make
it happen. |
TrekMovie
will continue to monitor this and anything related to Star
Trek returning to TV. |

Star
Trek's Chris Pine: Benedict Cumberbatch is "fitting
in quite nicely" |
By
David Brown
February 1, 2012
|
The Captain Kirk star gives an update on the filming
of the sci-fi sequel. |
Chris
Pine has said that British stars Benedict Cumberbatch and
Alice Eve have been settling in well on the set of the Star
Trek sequel. |
The
31-year-old actor, who plays Captain James T. Kirk in J.
J. Abrams' film reboot of the classic series, took time
out of filming the sci-fi blockbuster to attend the premiere
of his latest film, This Means War. |
And
he revealed that filming so far has been "fantastic."
and that his new co-stars are fitting in well. |
Pine
commented: "They're getting on great. We have
a really good, warm, inclusive group from the first one
and I think everybody's kind of getting the hang of things
and fitting in quite nicely." |
After
being announced as a cast member in January, Cumberbatch
said: "It's a great job to get, and I'm thrilled." |
He
added: "I'm hugely, hugely excited and I'm very, very
flattered. I'm very, very excited... I'm just getting my
head around the fact that it's happened. My headline
is that I'm over the moon." |
Cumberbatch
and Eve are not the only Brits among the cast---Simon Pegg
is reprising his role as engineer Scotty, while former Doctor
Who actor Noel Clarke is reported to be playing "a
family man with a wife and young daughter." |
The
film, which is being scripted by Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof
and Roberto Orci, began production in Los Angeles on January
15, 2012, and has a scheduled release date of May 17, 2013. |
