the holiday season with your friends and colleagues
in a fun and festive environment. All members
and friends of the USS Republic and USS Atlanta

PLEASE
RSVP!
"RSVP"
is an acronym for the French term "Répondez,
s'il vous plaît," which means, literally,
"Respond, if you please." It
is not merely a courtesy; it is a request that you
let your hostess know if you are planning to attend
(and with how many guests) so that your lovely and
gracious hostess can make sufficient table arrangements
and seating accommodations as necessary for everyone's
comfort. There are two ways to RSVP this event: Visit
our Facebook
Event Page and click "Join" or simply
send
an email to Captain Eric. |

NEWS
& ANNOUNCEMENTS
TrekTrax
Atlanta announces additional guests for 2013 |
In
addition to TrekTrax
Atlanta
billing itself as "The National Klingon Konvention,"
TXA is also billing itself as "The Star Trek Fan
Film Festival" and has been working to bring in cast
and crew members from as many fan film productions as possible
as guests for panel discussions, workshops and 'round-the-clock
episode screenings. We previously announced guests
from Star
Trek: Reliant, Project:
Potemkin, Star
Trek: Lexington and Star
Trek: Grissom, and are pleased to announce
that we have recently confirmed additional guests representing
three additional fan film productions.
Starship
Farragut will be returning to TrekTrax
Atlanta for our third year with Michael Bednar, Michael
Day, Donna Smith Parker and Frank Parker, Jr. Joining
us for the very first time will be Dean Rogers, Jacob
Stanford and Jerry Stanford from Star
Trek: Valkyrie.
TrekTrax Atlanta is especially delighted to announce that
James Cawley, creator, executive producer and former
star of Star
Trek: Phase II, will also be attending
and presenting a "rough cut" of an upcoming but
not-yet-completed episode.
In addition to episodes from all of the fan film productions
listed above, TrekTrax Atlanta will also include in its screenings
fan films from Star
Trek: Intrepid, Star
Trek: Chains of Betrayal and Star
Trek: Of Gods and Men.
A number of other fan film productions have been contacted
and we hope to be able to announce additional guest confirmations
and/or episode screenings from them soon.
Preregistered memberships for TrekTrax
Atlanta 2013 are now available for purchase at the TrekTrax
Atlanta web site. The sooner you purchase
your membership, the better! |
TrekTrax
Atlanta crowdfunding campaigns coming soon
|
As
mentioned last
issue, TrekTrax Atlanta is currently developing
two different crowdfunding campaigns to help us pay off our
outstanding financial liabilities from our first two conventions
so that we can move forward with our third convention in April
with a clean balance sheet. We had hoped to be
able to announce those campaigns this issue, but technical
difficulties with video production have delayed that. We're
currently hoping to announce their launch at next weekend's
Holiday Party. In the meantime, we urge you to
consider visiting the TrekTrax
Atlanta web site and clicking the "Memberships,"
"Merchandise," "Cafe Press" and/or "Donate"
button(s). While we're very proud of our fan film
guest line-up to date, we've also got a couple of potential
well-known Star Trek celebrity guests "on hold"
pending the achievement of our fundraising goal. We
simply cannot commit to new financial obligations until we've
resolved our old ones. Only with your support can
TrekTrax Atlanta bring in the celebrity guests we know you
want to see. Thank you! |

On December 3, Paramount released the first official
movie poster for Star Trek Into Darkness (top left).
Response to the poster in the fan media was definitely
mixed, with many fans concerned over the image's dark and
ominous overtones as well as its overused meme. Recent
films using the same tired design include (clockwise from
top right) The Raid: Redemption (2011), Battleship
(2012) and Battle Los Angeles (2011). For
an even more amazing overview of the profound lack of creativity
in Hollywood advertising, see "The 13 Most Popular
Movie Poster Trends" at Movies.com.

ABOUT
THE REPUBLIC
|
The
USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned
as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988,
at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia. As
of December 16, 2012, the Republic crew includes 47
members who are active members of STARFLEET in good
standing. |
The
Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule
of events for its members, frequently partnering with other
local science fiction groups in the Atlanta area for joint
activities, but does not hold meetings on a consistently
fixed date each month. |
Because
the USS Republic is a duly commissioned chapter
of STARFLEET International and is bound and governed by
its Constitution and By-Laws, membership in STARFLEET
is a prerequisite for membership in the Republic. Combined
annual dues for both groups are $25 per person and is
collected by the chapter (family discounts are available
with certain conditions and restrictions). Membership
in the Republic includes access to our YahooGroups
message board, voting privileges in chapter elections
and a personalized laminated membership card which entitles
the member to discounts and rebates on products and services
offered by our Member Benefits Program Partners. Additional
information on Republic membership and how to join
and reenlist is on our award-winning web site.

Into
Darkness London Event w/ Burk, Cumberbatch & Eve: New
Character Details |
By
TrekMovie.com Staff
December 14, 2012
|
Benedict
Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and producer Bryan Burk were at the
BFI IMAX theater in London on Friday to promote Star
Trek Into Darkness. They were joined by Simon
Pegg and J. J. Abrams via recorded messages. TrekMovie
has distilled the info given out in interviews and via the
Q&A to the press.
Here are some highlights...
|
|
Bryan
Burk (and J. J. Abrams via recorded message) indicate
run time for Into Darkness will be 2 hours---with
"upwards of 40 minutes" shot with IMAX cameras |
|
Burk
refuses to take bait on confirming "Khan,"
saying "our villain is John Harrison" |
|
Eve
reveals her Carol Marcus is "a doctor, a PhD"
and (in interview with IGN) says Marcus is a weapons
expert |
|
Cumberbatch
describes Harrison as "a terrorist" who
"does despicable things for a noble cause" |
|
Also
reveals Harrison is a master in weapons, hand to hand
combat and "psychological warfare" |
|
Burk
said that they felt even with all the good will
from 2009's Star Trek, the team wanted to
"step up our game" and make Into Darkness
"much bigger than [2009's Star Trek]"
but with also more "character development"
as well
|
|
Burk
says John Harrison is "a much stronger villain"
than Nero |
|
Burk
reveals that even though London in Into Darkness
featured, no shooting was in London |
